The Spark

Thermostats were ugly beige boxes. Tony Fadell (iPod creator) wanted one that was beautiful.

The Growth Engine

The 'Leaf' Gamification & Aspirational Sustainability: Nest tacticaly successfully applied Apple-level design to the most boring object in the house. Their growth engine is 'The Energy Saving Flywheel'—using a simple green 'Leaf' icon to reward users for saving money. By turning a chore (managing HVAC) into a high-status design statement, they appealed to the 'Eco-Conscious Techie' segment. Their expansion strategy relied on the 'Visible Status' of the device on the wall, combined with utility-company partnerships that offered the hardware for free in exchange for peak-load management rights, building a massive installation base through institutional leverage.
