The Spark
Electric cars were golf carts (slow and ugly). Elon wanted to prove they could be the best cars on the road.
The Growth Engine
The 'High-Status' Master Plan & Vertically Integrated Supercharging: Tesla's growth engine tacticaly successfully inverted the 'Green' car marketing playbook. Their growth engine was the 'Top-Down' transition—building a high-performance Roadster to prove EVs could be sexy, then using those profits to fund the mass-market Model 3. By building their own 'Supercharger' network, they solved the single biggest objection (range anxiety) while creating a proprietary hardware moat. With $0 spent on traditional advertising, they relied on 'Brand-as-a-Movement' and constant viral software updates to turn owners into a global army of evangelists.
